Where to Look? How to Find It?

It is important to remember that the District of Columbia was formed by land that came from existing states, Maryland and Virginia. As such, your family roots may lie in one of those states, and you may have to research there as well as in Washington, DC.

There are many places to search for answers to your District of Columbia genealogy questions. If you know what is available, you can make much better use of your time and effort in finding out all you can about your District of Columbia ancestors. Here is where to start some of your searching.
