Where to Look? How to Find It?

Alabama became a territory in 1817. Prior to this, it was part of Mississippi Territory. In 1819, Alabama became a state. The first Federal census taken in Alabama occurred in 1820 although very little of it remains.

There are many places to search for answers to your Alabama genealogy questions. If you know what is available, you can make much better use of your time and effort in finding out all you can about your Alabama ancestors in the US. Here is where to start some of your searching.

We have gathered together a list of those resources we are aware of for the most common resources, and also some of the less common places to look for information about your family. So, help yourself to the information below, and go hunting.

Online Alabama Death Records, Indexes & Obituaries. This is billed as "A Genealogy Records Guide" from a non-governmental source.

Alabama online genealogy tutorial resources found here from the Alabama Department of Archives and History.

There are further genealogy resources available here Alabama Genealogy and History Guide, another non-governmental site with links for various genealogy topics for the state.

Another source is Alabama County resources for your genealogy search help. Libraries and Family History Centers, Local Archives, Historical Societies, Genealogical Societies, and additional links are all here in a handy chart format which you can download and/or print out.

Also, there is a state Alabama Historical Association which can also be found at PO Box 300100, Montgomery, Alabama 36130-0100.
