The Northwest Territories entered the Canadian Confederation July 15, 1870 when the Hudson's Bay Company ceded the territory to Canada, but the current borders were formed April 1, 1999, when the territory was subdivided to create Nunavut.

There are many places to search for answers to your Northwest Territories genealogy questions. If you know what is available, you can make much better use of your time and effort in finding out all you can about your Canadian ancestors in "The Territories". Here is where to start some of your searching.

We are still gathering together lists of those resources we are aware of for the most common resources, and also some of the less common places to look for information about your family. So, help yourself to the information below, and go hunting.

The Prince of Wales Northern Heritage Center states the NWT Archives' mission is "to identify, acquire, make accessible, and preserve unpublished records that document the history of the Northwest Territories".

Here is the LDS Wiki page for the Northwest Territories genealogy information. Be aware that the Wiki pages for Canadian provinces and territories can be very thin in information.
