Answers to the questions in the 1840 census records were to be based on the status of households on June 1, 1840.

In the 1840 census records there were 26 states in the United States (Michigan and Arkansas were new). The two new territories were Wisconsin and Iowa, and they were also enumerated in the 1840 census records.
