1930 United States Census Questions

Answers to the 1930 census records questions were to be based on the status of households on April 1, 1930.


Column Question
1 street, avenue, road, etc.
2 house number in cities or farm
3 number of dwelling house in order of visitation
4 number of family in the order of visitation
5 name of each person (surname, given name, middle initial) whose place of abode on April 1, 1930, was in this family. Include every person living on April 1, 1930, and omit any children born since April 1, 1930.
6 relationship of this person to head of the family
7 home owned or rented
8 value of home (if owned), or monthly rent (if rented)
9 does home have a radio set?
10 does this family live on a farm?
11 sex
12 color or race
13 age at last birthday
14 marital condition
15 age at first marriage
16 attended school or college any time since September 1, 1929
17 whether able to read and write
18 birthplace of person (US state or territory, or country if foreign-born). Distinguish Can-Fr from Can-Eng, and Irish Free State from Northern Ireland.
19 birthplace of father (US state or territory, or country if foreign-born). Distinguish Can-Fr from Can-Eng, and Irish Free State from Northern Ireland.
20 birthplace of mother (US state or territory, or country if foreign-born). Distinguish Can-Fr from Can-Eng, and Irish Free State from Northern Ireland.
21 language spoken at home before coming to the United States for foreign-born
22 year of immigration to the United States
23 naturalized or alien
24 whether able to speak English
25 trade, profession, or particular kind of work as spinner, salesman, riveter, etc
26 industry or business as cottonmill, dry goods store, shipyard, public school, etc
27 class of worker
28 whether actually at work (yes or no)
29 line number for unemployment schedule if no for number 28
30 whether a veteran of the US military or naval forces mobilized for any war or expedition (yes or no)
31 what war or expedition
32 number of farm schedule

In the 1930 census, servicemen were treated as residents of their duty posts, so they are not enumerated with their family.

Indians were included in the general population enumeration but they answered different questions.

Residents of Alaska, whose enumeration began October 1, 1929, also answered slightly different questions.
