1900 United States Census Questions

Answers to the 1900 census records questions were to be based on the status of households on June 1, 1900.


Column Question
none street, in cities
none house number, in cities
1 number of dwelling house in the order of visitation
2 number of family in the order of visitation
3 name of each person (surname, given name, middle initial) whose place of abode on June 1, 1900, was in this family. Include every person living on June 1, 1900, and omit any children born after June 1, 1900.
4 relationship of each person to head of the family
5 color or race
6 sex
7 date of birth: month, year
8 age at last birthday
9 single, married, widowed, or divorced
10 number of years married
11 mother of how many children
12 number of these children living
13 birthplace of this person. If US give state and territory; if foreign, country
14 birthplace of father of this person. If US give state and territory; if foreign, country
15 birthplace of mother of this person. If US give state and territory; if foreign, country
16 year of immigration to the United States
17 number of years in the United States
18 naturalization
19 occupation, trade, or profession of each person 10 years of age and older
20 months not employed
21 attended school (in months)
22 can read
23 can write
24 can speak English
25 own or rent home
26 home owned free or mortgaged
27 farm or house
28 number of farm schedule

In the 1900 census there were 45 states (Utah was new), and 5 territories (Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, New Mexico, and Oklahoma) enumerated.
